LETTER: Rubio worked to get toxic burn legislation passed for veterans

Letter to the editor

As a past president of the Association of the U.S. Army for the Emerald Coast, and having spent almost five years advising veterans on how to launch their own companies and serving as an advocate at the Veterans Treatment Court in Pensacola, I am in daily contact with our veterans. These men and women so often come home from their service and struggle to adjust. That struggle is compounded when they are dealing with the effects of toxic burn pit exposure.

There are millions of veterans across the country who have developed a disease as a result of their exposure and yet were denied the care they are owed by the Veterans Administration.

But when Sen. Marco Rubio learned of this flaw in the system, he got right to work. He joined forces with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, and then others in the House and the Senate, to craft bipartisan legislation to address this. This legislation just passed the Senate, and if President Biden signs it, these veterans will get the life-saving care they deserve.

Sen. Rubio has been pushing for this legislation for a long time and veterans and veterans’ families owe him our gratitude.
