FORT WALTON BEACH − The Veterans Tribute Tower Committee of Fort Walton Beach needs help raising funds to support its goals for the Wreaths Across America event later this year.

Here's what we know about Wreaths Across America and the committee's "Get it Done July" fundraiser.

What is Wreaths Across America?

National Wreaths Across America Day falls each year on the third Saturday of December. This year, the date will be Dec. 16.

The initiative plans to ensure that every veteran's final resting place will receive a salute and a wreath placement to ensure their stories are not forgotten and that families can once again honor their loved ones.

Update on progress

"We are about halfway there," said Veterans Tribute Tower Chairman Tom Rice. "There are over 1,800 veterans that are in Beal Cemetery, and we want a wreath for every single one."

Rice went on to say that the holiday season can be extremely busy for everyone, and it is easy to be overwhelmed by attending multiple events.

"That's why Get it Done July is so important. Even if it has to go to August, we will make sure we reach our goals," said Rice.

As of Thursday, the committee has 240 wreaths sponsored and needs 560 more to meet its goal. In all, 905 wreaths of the 1,800 goal have been bought.

Where will the event take place?

The Wreaths Placement Day Ceremony will be held Dec. 16 at Beal Cemetery, 316 Beal Pkwy NW, Fort Walton Beach.
